Mercadier

13290 Aix-en-Provence

Mercadier manufactures mineral decorative finishes in Aix-en-Provence: trowelled béton ciré systems (EBC, PMB, Finition Béton Lisse), self-levelling poured floors (SC+, AXXX), lime plasters, renders and paints. Each system has its own colour card — the EBC alone runs to more than eighty shades — sold from a trial pot up to a 29.5 kg sack. Every product publishes its yield per kilo, its application thickness by substrate and a technical data sheet, so a surface can be costed rather than bought as a fixed kit.

A retailer, not a maker: Ökobo is an ecological building-materials shop run by Yohann Klein from La Roche-sur-Yon. It formulates nothing — it distributes in France four German houses that do: Kreidezeit, Auro, Beeck and ClayTec. Which is why it is here: between them those four cover almost every mineral binder on this page — lime, silicate, clay and casein — with compositions published ingredient by ingredient, which very few makers do. Kreidezeit's smooth lime paint is slaked marble lime, marble powders and sands, methylcellulose and citric acid, tinted with the shop's own pigments.

Maison Ecolo

69570 Dardilly

A retailer, not a maker: an online shop for natural materials run from Dardilly, near Lyon, by ACA Management SARL. It sells other houses' paints, washes and renders, among them the Italian Dolci, whose lime finishing renders are lime putty and marble powder, sold in 25 kg buckets in coarse or fine grain. Its place here is on the lime side rather than the paint side: what it brings is a ready-mixed mineral render, tinted afterwards with pigments, with a coverage figure printed on the bucket — one of the few French shopfronts to publish a square-metres-per-sack for this kind of product.

Signature d'Exception

69480 Ambérieux-d'Azergues

A distributor's own label, not a manufacturing house. *Signature d'Exception* is the colour card of the Sign'NATURE network, carried by Espace Coopérative, the co-operative of independent paint merchants at Ambérieux-d'Azergues north of Lyon. The paint is formulated for it, not by it. What makes it worth having here is what a retailers' co-operative does: over four hundred shades, machine-tinted in the network's own shops, arranged as harmonies rather than colour families — *Les Chaleureuses*, *Les Pétillantes* — and sold by the litre, the 2.5 L and the 10 L with the price on show, which the makers on this page rarely do.
