Damp rooms

Renders for damp rooms: bathroom, kitchen, utility room

A bathroom is not a shower: its walls get steam, condensation and the odd splash, but no running water. That is good news, because many mineral renders thrive there — lime in particular takes moisture from the air and gives it back, which avoids the condensation that streams down a sealed wall.

The test

Included: renders and stuccos whose water verdict is at least “steam only”. Clay and gypsum renders are left out: they break down when damp lasts.

Renders that qualify

Among paints, these pass the same test: Badigeon de chaux, Peinture à la chaux, Peinture au silicate, Peinture acrylique.

To make it last

  1. 1Ventilate: a vapour-open render regulates humidity, it does not replace an extractor.
  2. 2Behind a basin or worktop, choose a finish that takes splashes, or protect that area (soap, wax, mineral water repellent).
  3. 3Let lime carbonate for several weeks before exposing the room to steam.
  4. 4Do not seal a vapour-open render under acrylic paint: you lose exactly what made it suitable.
